Plum Wood Slice — PB2601002

This plum burl wood slice presents a rugged natural edge with bark layer intact — the original contour of the tree preserved around the full perimeter. Authentic borer beetle trails trace through the grain, and radial hairline checking radiates from the central pith outward. Minor milling marks remain visible on the reverse — honest evidence of how the piece was cut. Urban salvaged from Sunnyridge, Germiston. One piece. Exact item shown.

Documented as specimen PB2601002, this plum wood slice was cut on 19 January 2026 and field-seasoned prior to indoor storage.

The slice features a clearly defined central pith with delicate radial hairline checking forming a subtle starburst pattern.

Specimen Characteristics — PB2601002

This specimen (PB2601002) represents a transverse burl cross-section from the PB2601 harvest. The material is defined by a central pith structure with radial grain movement extending outward.

The presence of pith and natural checking introduces structural variation across the piece, influencing both its visual composition and working behaviour.

Visual Character

Natural features include:

  • Densely figured plum burl grain
  • Warm honey-gold to amber tones
  • Central pith focal point
  • Natural radial hairline checking
  • Borer beetle veining patterns
  • Natural bark edge

These characteristics are natural features of the wood and not defects.

Working With Plum Burl

Plum burl wood is valued for its dense structure and complex grain formation.

Burl growth produces irregular grain patterns, natural voids, and organic variation, making each piece unique and suited for decorative applications. For technical reference, see The Wood Database.
