Root Flare Hardwood Slab – Solid Resin Inlay Blank (GS2602002)
This root wood slab (GS2602002) features a solid structure with radial grain focus, suited to resin inlay and precision applications. Cut from a dense root flare section in Edenvale, Gauteng, the specimen presents a narrow, solid slab with uninterrupted structure and a concentrated grain focal point.
This root wood slab (GS2602002) was cut on 3 February 2026 and field-seasoned before indoor storage. Unlike void-dominant specimens, this piece maintains a continuous heartwood structure, offering a stable working surface with clearly defined grain detail. The slab has been bandsawn and sanded to 100 grit, preserving the natural surface while making the grain clearly visible.

Cut Type: Transverse cross-section (Root)
Specimen Characteristics — GS2602002
This specimen (GS2602002) represents a dense root flare section from the GS2602 harvest, where the material retains a continuous internal structure without significant void formation. Grain compression and directional shifts around a central focal point create a concentrated visual “eye,” distinguishing it from more open or void-dominant pieces within the same harvest.
Visual Character
This slab is defined by its solid structure and concentrated grain movement rather than large voids.
- Radial grain focal point (“eye”)
- Fine micro-canyon grain lines
- Smooth heartwood surface
- Live-edge bark contrast
- Minor hairline checking

Working With Root Flare Timber
Root-derived timber develops under structural stress at the base of the tree, producing irregular grain patterns and density variation. In solid sections like this slab, these characteristics appear as subtle grain distortion and focal points rather than open cavities.
This makes the material especially suitable for resin inlay, where fine features can be highlighted rather than filled.
