Root Flare Wood Slab – Sculptural Void Resin Blank (GS2602001)
This root wood slab (GS2602001) features a natural void and root flare grain, suited to resin casting and feature slab applications. Cut from a ground stump root system in Edenvale, Gauteng, the specimen presents a widening flare structure with a hollowed core and dense outer edges shaped by long-term environmental exposure.
This root wood slab (GS2602001) was cut on 3 February 2026 and field-seasoned before indoor storage. The slab is physically stable and displays a balance between solid heartwood and hollow structure, making it ideal for resin applications where voids become part of the design. The piece has been bandsawn and sanded to 100 grit, preserving natural texture while allowing the grain to be clearly visible.
Provenance Certificate
Specimen ID: GS2602001
Harvest: GS2602
Origin: Edenvale, Gauteng, South Africa
Species: Undetermined (Root-Derived Timber)
Cut Type: Transverse cross-section (Root)
Specimen Characteristics — GS2602001
This specimen (GS2602001) represents a root flare section from the GS2602 harvest, where the base of the tree transitions into the root system. The interaction between structural stress and decay processes produces a combination of dense outer wood and hollowed internal sections, resulting in a piece with pronounced depth and variation compared to trunk-derived material.
Visual Character
This slab is defined by its natural void and flowing root grain structure. The transition between solid wood and hollowed areas creates strong visual contrast and depth.
- Central natural void structure
- Root flare grain movement
- Live-edge bark (partially loose)
- Minor surface checking
- Subtle end-grain features

Suggested Uses
This root wood slab for resin is well suited for:
- Resin river table elements
- Coffee table feature slabs
- Sculptural resin work
- Decorative wall pieces
The natural void makes this slab particularly suitable for resin casting applications. Explore more material options in our
wood specimens collection. Stabilisation may be required depending on final use. Not recommended for structural applications.
Working With Root Flare Timber
Root-derived timber forms under structural stress where the trunk meets the root system. This produces irregular grain direction, density variation, and natural void formation.
Unlike straight-grain lumber, these features create unique opportunities in resin work, where cavities and transitions become part of the final design.

Timber Origin
Urban salvaged timber from Edenvale, Gauteng, South Africa. Recovered from a long-standing stump and milled locally, preserving the natural formation of the original tree base.
